Cil - 2

  1. CIL 2 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller in 1977.

It can be somewhat frightening, facing challenges that seem insurmountable, but facing them one at a time, and eventually coming up with some sort of solution, they do become less formidable, and it actually turns out that with each one the effort and the ability to meet the challenge becomes easier and easier, until they are no longer "fearsome" challenges at all, they just become "part of the job".

When Tim Underwood sent me this commission in 1977, I had been illustrating books and magazines full time for about two full years and had reached a point where I no longer felt any apprehension about doing a job, the challenge was no longer "if" I could do the job, but "how" I would go about doing it. Being an illustrator was becoming less work and becoming more fun.
